Nilgiri

Perched at approximately 2,200 feet above sea level, Nilgiri is one of the highest peaks in Bangladesh, offering a breathtaking vantage point where the earth meets the sky. Visitors are often treated to the spectacular sight of clouds drifting below the hilltop, creating a sea of white mist that blankets the lush green valleys. The air here is crisp and significantly cooler than the plains, providing a tranquil escape from the urban hustle.

The experience at Nilgiri is defined by its shifting moods; at sunrise, the horizon glows in shades of amber and gold, while at night, the lack of light pollution allows for an unparalleled view of the starlit sky. Managed by the Bangladesh Army, the area is exceptionally well-maintained, featuring landscaped viewpoints and seating areas that allow travelers to soak in the panoramic views of the Sangu River winding through the distant hills of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Nilgiri is located in the Thanchi Upazila of Bandarban District, a region historically inhabited by various indigenous ethnic communities, including the Mro people. Geographically, it forms part of the Arakan Yoma mountain range extension. For many years, these remote highlands were difficult to access due to the rugged terrain and dense forest cover. The development of Nilgiri as a premier tourist destination began in the early 2000s when the Bangladesh Army constructed a road network and security outposts, subsequently establishing a high-altitude resort to promote eco-tourism and regional stability.
