Boga Lake

A mythical, deep-blue tectonic lake perched 1,246 feet high in the Bandarban hills, offering breathtaking views and serene isolation.

Overview

Boga Lake is a mesmerizing deep-blue natural reservoir nestled atop a hill in the Ruma Upazila of Bandarban. At approximately 1,246 feet above sea level, this tectonic lake is surrounded by high hills and dense bamboo forests. Visitors are often struck by the lake's near-perfect rectangular shape and the way its water color seems to shift depending on the time of day and the sunlight. The atmosphere here is one of profound tranquility, broken only by the whispers of the wind and the distant calls of forest birds.

Camping or staying in the indigenous cottages along the shoreline offers a raw, authentic experience of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. At night, the sky transforms into a vast canvas of stars, mirrored perfectly in the still, dark waters of the lake. It serves as a vital resting point for trekkers aiming to conquer Keokradong, providing a cool, misty environment that feels worlds away from the humid plains of the rest of the country.

History & context

Local legend among the Bawm and Khumi communities tells of a 'Bogal' or a dragon-like deity that once lived in a cave here. According to myth, the lake was formed when the earth collapsed after the dragon was killed, swallowing a village. Geologically, however, experts believe the lake is a dormant volcanic crater or was formed by a tectonic shift millions of years ago. It remains a sacred site for the local indigenous groups, who have inhabited these hills for centuries, maintaining a lifestyle deeply connected to the land and the seasonal rhythms of the forest.

Getting there

Take a bus from Dhaka to Bandarban city. From there, hire a local jeep, known as a 'Chander Gari,' to Ruma Bazar. After registering your name at the local army camp, continue by jeep to the Bagamukh area, followed by a steep uphill trek to reach the lake. Hiring a local guide is mandatory for the journey.

Travel tips

  • Wear sturdy trekking shoes with good grip for the slippery, hilly terrain.
