Muhuri Project

The Muhuri Project is a massive irrigation and flood control initiative located at the meeting point of the Feni and Muhuri rivers. The site has evolved into a serene eco-tourism destination, characterized by the vast expanse of the reservoir that resembles an inland sea. Visitors are greeted by the sight of 40 sluice gates and the country’s first large-scale wind power plant, whose towering turbines create a striking silhouette against the horizon. The area is a haven for photography enthusiasts, offering panoramic views of the water reflecting the changing colors of the sky.

The environment is particularly captivating during the winter months when the water level recedes slightly, exposing sandbars and attracting thousands of migratory birds. Small country boats are available for hire, allowing travelers to navigate the calm waters and observe the local fishing culture up close. The cool river breeze and the rhythmic sound of the wind turbines provide a peaceful escape from the urban hustle of neighboring cities. Local stalls near the embankment offer fresh river fish, providing a literal taste of the region's bounty.

The Muhuri Irrigation Project was initiated in the late 1970s and completed in the mid-1980s with international cooperation to boost agricultural productivity in the Feni, Noakhali, and Chittagong districts. By regulating the flow of the Muhuri and Feni rivers, the project prevented saline water intrusion and seasonal flooding, transforming the regional economy. Culturally, it represents a significant engineering milestone for Bangladesh. The addition of the wind energy park in the early 2000s further established the site as a center for sustainable development, blending infrastructure with the natural riverine landscape.
