Nafakhum Waterfall

Hidden deep within the Remakri Union of Thanchi, Nafakhum is often hailed as the 'Niagara of Bangladesh' due to its impressive volume of water and the horseshoe shape of the falls. The journey to the waterfall is as much an experience as the destination itself, involving a scenic engine-boat ride upstream on the Sangu River, flanked by towering cliffs and lush greenery. Reaching the falls requires a trek through rocky terrain and shallow streams, offering a raw encounter with the wilderness of the Hill Tracts.

Upon arrival, the thunderous roar of the Sangu River dropping approximately 25 to 30 feet creates a misty, ethereal atmosphere. The surrounding landscape is characterized by massive boulders and dense tropical forests, providing a sense of isolation from the modern world. Visitors can feel the powerful spray of the water and witness the local Marma community's way of life in the nearby Remakri village, where the simplicity of wooden houses on stilts blends perfectly with the rugged terrain.

Nafakhum is located in the Bandarban Hill Tracts, a region historically inhabited by diverse indigenous groups, predominantly the Marma people. The name 'Nafakhum' is derived from the Marma language, where 'Nafa' refers to a specific type of fish and 'Khum' means a deep pool or fall. Geographically, this area is part of the Arakan Yoma mountain range, which features some of the highest peaks in Bangladesh and serves as a vital watershed for the Sangu River. The region remained relatively inaccessible to outsiders until the late 20th century, preserving its unique cultural heritage and pristine natural environment.
