National Zoo

Situated on the banks of the Turag River in Mirpur, the Bangladesh National Zoo spans approximately 186 acres, offering a sprawling green escape from the urban density of Dhaka. Visitors are greeted by a diverse collection of over 2,000 animals across nearly 200 species. The primary highlights include the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers, African lions, and a significant population of saltwater crocodiles. The landscape is characterized by winding shaded paths, two large serene lakes that attract migratory birds during winter, and spacious enclosures that attempt to mimic natural habitats.

The atmosphere is a blend of educational exploration and family leisure. While wandering through the aviaries and primate houses, you will encounter the rhythmic sounds of tropical birds and the chatter of Hanuman langurs. The zoo also features a dedicated museum providing insights into the skeletons and biological history of various mammals. Established in 1974, the Bangladesh National Zoo serves as the primary facility for wildlife conservation and public education in the country. It was moved to its current location in Mirpur to accommodate a growing collection that originally began at the High Court area in the mid-20th century. Over the decades, it has evolved from a simple menagerie into a central institution for breeding endangered species, such as the Royal Bengal Tiger.
