Sitakunda Eco Park

A lush hilly sanctuary featuring twin waterfalls, exotic botanical gardens, and sweeping views of the Bay of Bengal.

Overview

Sitakunda Eco Park and Botanical Garden is a sanctuary of rugged hills and cascading water, offering a dramatic escape into the nature of the Chandranath Range. The park is defined by its deep green canopy and two iconic waterfalls, Sahasradhara and Suptadhara. Visitors can feel the shift in atmosphere as they ascend the winding trails, where the air cools and the sounds of the bustling highway below are replaced by the rustle of leaves and the distant roar of falling water. The park serves as a vital green lung for the region, showcasing a rich variety of native and exotic plant species across its undulating terrain.

Beyond the flora, the park provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal from its higher ridges. The experience is one of physical exertion and visual reward; hiking the steep stairs to the waterfalls is a challenge that culminates in the refreshing sight of water plunging into natural stone basins. Whether you are trekking through the dense forest patches or standing atop a viewpoint watching the sunset over the sea, the park evokes a sense of raw, untamed beauty unique to the Chittagong hills.

History & context

Established in 1998, Sitakunda Eco Park is recognized as the first eco-park in Bangladesh. It was developed to protect the biodiversity of the region and to promote eco-tourism while conserving the fragile ecosystem of the Chandranath hills. The area is culturally significant due to its proximity to the Chandranath Temple, a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, which sits atop the adjacent peak. Geologically, the park is part of the Sitakunda Range, characterized by its folded sedimentary rock formations and natural springs, which have been a point of geographical interest in the eastern part of Bengal for centuries.

Getting there

From Dhaka, take a Chittagong-bound bus or train and disembark at Sitakunda bazaar. From the bazaar, the park entrance is a short 2-kilometer trip accessible by local CNG auto-rickshaws. If traveling by train, the Bijoy Express or Mahanagar Express are reliable options to reach Chittagong, followed by local transport back to Sitakunda.

Travel tips

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip as the paths to the waterfalls are steep and can be slippery.
  • Carry an adequate supply of drinking water as there are few shops deep inside the hilly trails.
  • Visit during the early morning to avoid the midday heat and the larger crowds.
  • If visiting during the monsoon, be cautious of flash floods near the stream beds and leeches on the trails.
